Work in a church
Details: TFG will have a variety of Time For 2012 church placements. Many although not all of these churches will be in the East End of London which is both the neediest area of the city as well as the area that will be most directly impacted by the arrival of the Olympics. These churches vary in their size, worship style and denomination including: Anglican, non-denominational, and Baptist. Volunteers will need to be confident working all ages, taking initiative, sharing their faith, and living in a deprived multi-cultural context.
Accommodation: Church placements will typically have volunteers live with a ‘host family’ – a couple or family who have agreed to house the volunteer for the year. Meals and other arrangements will be decided between the host family, volunteer and supervisor. Some churches with multiple volunteers may house them in a shared flat.
Possible activities:
- Both short term and long term event planning, for example; community festivals, Olympic-themed holiday clubs, evangelistic evenings, sports competitions
- Involvement in ongoing church-based ministries such as: youth and children’s work, Bible studies, homeless outreach, visiting the elderly, debt counselling, etc.
- Help with administration
- Networking with other churches and organisations to engage with the Olympics
- Sports ministry
- Building relationships in the church and local community
- Working with a team doing assemblies and after school clubs in local primary and secondary schools
Work at a charity/community organisation
Details: Many Christian groups are considering how they can take advantage of the Olympics coming to the UK. Some will see it as an opportunity to start new projects directly related to the Olympics while others will simply take advantage of the opportune time to enhance their service to the community. Accomdoation: Most charities will typically have volunteers live with a ‘host family’ from a local supporting church – a couple or family who have agreed to house the volunteer for the year. Meals and other arrangements will be decided between the host family, volunteer and supervisor. Some groups with multiple volunteers may house them in a shared flat.
Possible activites:
- Helping with administration and public relations
- Researching and helping to organise new Olympic-related projects
- Representing the group at Olympic planning forums and committees
- Help with ongoing programmes such as: working with vulnerable people, youth, advocacy, education etc.
